One of the great things about fishing is that it is a year round sport. As colder temperature descend upon us, I can't help but think about another cool fishing adventure - ice fishing in Northern Minnesota at Sportsman's Lodge. Any die hard fisherman will tell you, there comes a time during the winter when cabin fever sets in and you just need to satisfy that urge to get a line in the water. Let me tell you, there is no better prescription for cabin fever than to do a little ice fishing!
In February 2021, Lori and I set out to Baudette, Minnesota for a long extended weekend of ice fishing. Little did we know, the trip would not be without a couple challenges, the first of which was just getting there. It wasn't long into the trip, our excitement to fish became slightly diminsihed when we found ourselves under the stress of traveling in near blizzard-like conditions. During our drive, I had the occasion to phone my fishing friend, Brian, who inquired how our trip was going? When I told him of the conditons we were experiencing, Brian sarcastically reminded me, like any good friend would do, that there is a little thing called a weather report and I might consider checking it next time before we decide to impulsively set out on a winter road trip.
"Slow and steady wins the race." We took our time traveling and our trusty Ford F-150 finally got us to Sportsman's Lodge, just a few hours behind schedule but with enough time to enjoy some dinner and a couple cold beers before calling it a night. The next morning we awoke, had a delicious breakfast, gathered our gear and set out in the snow machine to our fishing spot which was a nice little shanty on skids, several miles out on the lake.
Our fishing accomodations were more than aequate. We found ourselves in a roughly 10' x 12' garden shed of sorts whose exterior had been sprayed with some sort of foam insulation, sealing every nook and cranny from the outside elements. Inside the shanty was a propane heater that had warmed the interior enough for Lori, who is always cold, to shed her coat and settle in for a fun day of fishing. There were two benches inside our winter abode running along opposite walls from each other. Each bench had four 12" diameter holes drilled in front of it through what was easily estimated to be 3'-4' feet of ice. We were soon "lines in" just moments after being dropped off and jigging for walleye.
This was the beginning of two fun-filled days of ice fishing in northern Minnesota. During the day, we were even delivered a hot lunch by the courteous and professional staff - like Door Dash via snow machine! After all, fishing is a sport and one should not overlook the sustenance that might be needed to get "just one more cast." If you ever find yourself suffering from cabin fever, consider an ice fishing adventure - you won't be disappointed - just be sure to check the weather report:)
